{"id":2277,"date":"2013-11-07T21:22:38","date_gmt":"2013-11-08T02:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thoughtcast.org\/?p=2277"},"modified":"2015-08-14T13:36:03","modified_gmt":"2015-08-14T18:36:03","slug":"cosmic-evolutions-predilection-for-constant-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thoughtcast.org\/cosmic-evolutions-predilection-for-constant-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Cosmic Evolution&#8217;s Predilection for Constant Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: an audio version of this interview was <a href=\"https:\/\/capeandislands.org\/post\/arts-and-ideas-october-6-2013\" target=\"_blank\">broadcast<\/a> by the <em>WGBH<\/em> affiliate <em>WCAI<\/em>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/capeandislands.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cape and Islands NPR station,<\/a> and by <a href=\"https:\/\/tunein.com\/radio\/KPIP-LP-947-s111511\/\" target=\"_blank\">KPIP<\/a> in Missouri.<\/p>\n<p>The theory of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.physicscentral.com\/explore\/writers\/chaisson.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">cosmic evolution<\/a> is a relatively new addition to the field of <a href=\"https:\/\/map.gsfc.nasa.gov\/universe\/\" target=\"_blank\">cosmology<\/a>, and attempts to answer the questions of who we are, <em>where<\/em> we are, and how we came to exist, among others, by taking the long view &#8212; from the big bang, to the present day.<br \/>\nHere&#8217;s another definition for you: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfa.harvard.edu\/~ejchaisson\/cosmic_evolution\/docs\/splash.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cosmic evolution<\/a> is the study of the many varied changes in the assembly and composition of energy, matter and life in the thinning and cooling Universe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/71919588?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This explanation comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eric_Chaisson\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Chaisson<\/a>, a vigorous champion of the cosmic evolutionary theory. He&#8217;s an astrophysicist at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfa.harvard.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.extension.harvard.edu\/about-us\/faculty-directory\/eric-j-chaisson\" target=\"_blank\">lecturer at Harvard Extension School<\/a>, who is also the subject of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.extension.harvard.edu\/hub\/topic\/faculty-insight\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty Insight<\/a> interview, conducted by ThoughtCast&#8217;s Jenny Attiyeh.<br \/>\nAnd while it might leave more questions asked than answered, we hope it will give you the chance to stick your toe into deep astrophysic waters, and feel the tug of the cosmic tide&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Note:\u00a0 Images of galaxies and other cosmic phenomena courtesy of Eric Chaisson.
